New Community Joins Guitar-Part Production

Following more than five years of groundbreaking GreenWood boatbuilding and sawmilling workshops and forest management training in the community of Copén, a second community cooperative has joined the GreenWood enterprise. The Cooperative Agroforestal MIRAVEZA Ltda. is currently harvesting and milling its first container of approximately 10,000 board feet of guitar neck stock under the close supervision of the GreenWood/MaderaVerde team, which includes several GreenWood-trained sawyers from Copén, who have already produced more than four containers of high-end mahogany guitar parts for the Taylor Guitar Company of El Cajon, California. Copén began its export enterprise about eight years ago, with the production of massive ship's knees that were employed in the reproduction of the Schooner Amistad at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. The community's forests were among the first to become FSC certified in the 1990s, and they are currently incorporated in a group-certification process that will include a cluster of neighboring community forests in the buffer zone of the Rio Plátano Biosphere Reserve.
