"Chairmen" of Peru

Building on the solid foundation of two Peru workshops conducted earlier this year by GreenWood artisan mentors, Brian Boggs and Curtis Buchanan, Brian departed at the end of October for a third chairmaking session in the Central Amazon. Working with 20 artisans from four different indigenous Yanesha communities in the Palcázu Valley, Brian plans to focus on the development and marketing of a new Windsor-style chair (designed by Curtis) and an outdoor garden bench (of his own design). Brian previewed his bench prototype at the High Point market for home furnishings in mid-October, in preparation for his upcoming workshop. The three training workshops and the marketing initiative are part of a yearlong pilot project sponsored by the Blue Moon Fund of Charlottesville, Virginia. GreenWood aims to support and expand its Peruvian enterprise into 2009 and beyond, in collaboration with two local NGOs, PaTS and ProNaturaleza.
